Meet BCS Cyclocross Racers Grant and Ross Ellwood
Boulder Cycle Sport is thrilled to welcome University of Colorado-Boulder students Grant and Ross Ellwood back to the Boulder Cycle Sport racing program for the 2018 – 2019 season. Here’s an introduction to the local riders. Be sure to ring your cowbells extra loud when you see them!
Grant Ellwood Racer Bio: I was born and raised in Boulder, CO and grew up playing all sorts of sports along with biking for fun. I started racing cyclocross in the 2013-14 season as a Junior (17 – 18). I was 19 when I first came to ride for BCS in 2015. As a Junior I was lucky enough to go and race in Europe at the EuroCrossCamp. There I gained valuable experience while racing with the top guys in the sport. EuroCrossCamp played a big role in getting me excited about cyclocross and what an awesome sport it is.
In the 2014-2015 season, I aged out of Juniors and began racing with the U23’s. I had a good season and traveled to Europe to race for a week and got the opportunity to go race at World Championships in Tabor, Czech Republic, where I ended up finishing 31st. This race has been one of my most memorable cyclocross moments so far in my cyclocross career. Getting the chance to race with the best in the world and represent our nation was an amazing moment.
While racing in the U23 category, I made it to two more World Championships. I raced in Zolder and Valkenberg finishing 35th and 29th respectively. I think my highlight race was the World Cup Zeven in Germany. I had an amazing start riding in the top 10 for a good part of the race and fell back to 17th, but showed myself I could ride with some of the top guys and be competitive.
For the 2018-19 season, I am racing Elite, and my main goals are to finish in the Top 5 in UCI races and ultimately finish in the Top 6 at National Championships, hopefully earning a spot to race at the Elite World Championships.
Ross Ellwood Racer Bio: My name is Ross Ellwood, and this will be my fifth season of racing cyclocross. I was 17 when I first began riding with Boulder Cycle Sport (previously I had ridden for Boulder Junior Cycling), but my brother and I have had strong ties with BCS for a long time.
I am currently a sophomore studying biology at the University of Colorado-Boulder. I raced cyclocross with Boulder Junior Cycling for three years as a Junior (15-16 and 17-18). My first major breakthrough season came in my second year racing 17-18. I had a great season, with multiple Top 5 finishes in UCI races and I finished 3rd at the USA Cycling National Championships in Hartford, Connecticut. This result earned me a spot on the USA team at the World Championships in Luxembourg in 2017! Racing in Luxembourg is one of my most memorable moments so far in my cyclocross career. It was a crazy course with steep drops and climbs, all covered in a solid ice!
Last season was my first year as a U23 racer and it went well, though it was a big step up from what I was used to. I was pleased to ride on the Boulder Cycle Sport Team where I raced alongside my brother, Grant.
My main goals for the 2018-2019 season are to be near the front of some of the UCI U23 races, and to earn a trip to race in Europe! I am honored to be riding with Boulder Cycle Sport, and I look forward to a great season!Community, Cyclocross, Road
