CALLING ALL CYCLISTS!

Boulder’s Walk & Bike Month in June is always a blast, and festivities usually climax on Bike to Work Day with several thousand people commuting by foot or bike or bus. This year, Boulder Transportation Connections is extending the fun with the first-ever Bike from Work Competition & Celebration at Twenty Ninth Street Mall.

In addition to bringing the always fun Eggless Relay – now in its 12th year – to the new venue, they’ll host food trucks, music, a bike repair tent, kids relay races, and many other fun social activities for all ages to help celebrate everything we love about cycling. More details to come! For now, they are calling for volunteers to help with our Bike from Work event and teams to register for the 12th annual Eggless Relay.

1. VOLUNTEER: No good community event is complete without dedicated volunteers to make it successful. To show appreciation, they’ll give volunteers thank-you bags full of goodies from our sponsors. To volunteer CLICK HERE

2. EGGLESS RELAY: For 11 years, costumed, fast or slow and fun-loving teams have joined for the Eggless Relay, a goofy competition that has been held on Bike to Work Day in east Boulder. Now, by bringing it to Twenty Ninth Street – after work – we’re planning for more teams and laughs. Compete for multiple awards, including “Champions” (1st place) to earn the honor to pass the coveted Eggless Trophy among team members for the entire year; “A Crack Behind” (2nd place); “Yolks on You” (last place); and “Spirit”, earned by the team with the best costumes.

To compete, you must have four team members, including three cyclists and one walker. Join the fun and sign up now! To sign up CLICK HERE

If you have questions on the Bike from Work Competition & Celebration event or would like to learn more, visit bouldertc.org or contact Amy Breunissen at amy@bouldertc.org or 303-728-4568.

Boulder Transportation Connections is here to help you develop, implement and maintain transportation programs that fit you or your organization’s needs to reduce single occupancy vehicle trips.

The trails are drying out, and the weather report looks like you’ll have the best Saturday in months. Perfect timing for the Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance Spring Membership Party!

Since BMA knows you’ll want to fit in a ride Saturday, they’ve teamed up with the rockstar crew at Oskar Blues for some beers & food happy hour style in Lyons May 18th, Saturday afternoon, from 3-7pm. Ride Hall, Heil, or your favorite trail, then cruise to OB’s downstairs to hang with your favorite BMAer’s!

This is a party for members only – so check your status today, or become a member Saturday at the door. And remember, BMA’s memberships are now tax-deductible!

Hope to see you there!

About Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance:

Great communities build trails, and great trails build community. That’s the mission of Boulder Mountainbike Alliance – to improve the trail experience for everyone in Boulder County, Colorado through social rides and events, advocacy, and trail building.

BMA members don’t fit any particular mold. Some of us are great-grandparents, while others are barely old enough to straddle a bike. We are professionals and students, parents and neighbors. Some have been mountain biking since before people called it “mountain biking,” but a lot of us are still trying to master the fine art of not falling in front of large groups of people. When we get home, most of us park our bikes next to a pair of well-worn hiking boots.

The only tie that binds BMA members is an absolute love of trails, and the belief that together we can make things better. We believe that to be the voice of the mountain bike community, we also need to be the muscle. That’s why BMA happily donates thousands of volunteer trailwork hours every year. Since 1991, BMA has contributed almost 30,000 hours of laboron trail projects, with an estimated value exceeding $500,000. BMA’s Mountain Bike Patrol assists and educates mountain bikers, and helps out any trail users in need, adding an additional 2,000 volunteer hours in 2010 alone. The BMA community raised over $500,000 in support of Valmont Bike Park, and BMA has received numerous accolades for our hard work, including the Boulder County Land Conservation Partnership Program Award.

We know that success isn’t easy, and with a history of service that dates back to 1991, we’re proved that we’re not just here, but we’re here for the long haul.

As I sit here and sift through my email inbox this Monday morning, I received notice tonight (May 6th) the Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance is having their monthly “brew-ha-ha” at Backcountry Pizza & Tap House. Just yesterday, I got up bright and early and rode the Betasso – Benjamin Loop, so after seeing this email it reminded me of an article I wrote a few years ago and I thought it was worth another post. Enjoy.

My First Boulder Mountain Bike Ride
by Brandon Dwight

I can remember it like it was yesterday. 21 years ago in the Fall of 1990, my mom and I where cresting the hill on Route 36 West looking at the Boulder Flatirons through the windshield of our rental car. Even though I was starting school at the University of Colorado in just a few days, it was the first time I had ever seen Boulder. I couldn’t believe the spectacular view. I also couldn’t wait to explore those mountains on my awesome high school graduation gift: a mountain bike. Thirty-five pounds of heavy-duty chromoly just begging to get dirty! Gazing on those Flatirons as we dropped into Boulder, I thought to myself, there must be hundreds of miles of mountain bike trails in every nook and cranny of those jagged rocks and I am going to ride every inch of them. Boy, was I in for a surprise.

After checking into our hotel room, I mounted my new trusty steed and made my way west toward the Flatirons, where I knew I would find a mountain bike trail. There I was huffing and puffing up Flagstaff Mountain Road in my ratty t-shirt, sweat pant cut-off shorts, hiking boots and no helmet. After a quarter of a mile, I had only made it to the first overlook and I thought I was going into coronary shock as my heart was beating uncontrollably. I pulled over to the side of the road to catch my breath and noticed a trail sign across the parking lot. Jackpot! A mountain bike trail! I made my way over to the trailhead and looked at the sign. It clearly stated, “No Bikes.”

What? No bikes. That can’t be right. This is Boulder! Everyone has a mountain bike! The sign must say no bikes just to scare hacks away, and clearly (hiking boots, sweat pant cut-offs, no helmet) I was not a hack. So, I made my way down the trail with a big ole grin on my face. This was my first Colorado singletrack! Man, was I cool. I approached a couple of hikers, slowed down and said hello. They looked at me like I was a three-headed alien. I shrugged and continued onward. The next hiker I encountered flagged me down to get my attention.

He said, ” Hey man, you know there are no bikes allowed on this trail? You could get a ticket and a fine for riding this trail.”

“Really?!” I said in a state of disbelief.

He replied, “Yep, there are many trails in Boulder for hikers only and you can’t ride your bike on any of them.”

“Well, where can I ride?” I asked.

He went on to explain there are not a lot of trails for mountain bikers in Boulder and I would need to get a map to find the few that existed. I said thanks and began to walk my bike down the trail. A few seconds later, he yelled down to me, “Oh yeah, and get a helmet!”

So, here I am 22 years later. I have a nicer mountain bike, I can ride to the top of Flagstaff , I have a helmet, but I still do not have a trail to ride out of Boulder. Which brings me to the point of this article:
